Three Dead in Mexico City Stampede During World Cup Celebration

Mexico City:** At least three people died after a crowd surge during celebrations marking Mexico’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, turning a historic night into tragedy.
Mexico secured a **2-0 victory over Ecuador** in the Round of 32, advancing to the knockout stage for the first time in 40 years. The win sparked massive celebrations, with more than one million fans gathering across Mexico City.
According to city authorities, the largest crowds assembled around the **Angel of Independence** monument, where celebrations continued late into the night with fireworks and street festivities.
Emergency responders treated several people who lost consciousness during the celebrations and transported them to hospitals after performing CPR. Health officials later confirmed that three people died from suffocation.
The victims were identified as a **19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man**.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged full support. In a message on social media, she urged fans to celebrate responsibly, emphasizing the importance of safety, caution, and consideration for others.
