Karachi Mayor Presents Rs60.45 Billion KMC Budget for Fiscal Year 2026-27

Karachi: Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has presented the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 before the City Council, proposing a balanced financial plan worth Rs60.451 billion with a projected surplus of Rs44.905 million.

According to the proposed budget, KMC expects total revenues of Rs60.451 billion, while total expenditures have been estimated at Rs60.406 billion, leaving a surplus of nearly Rs45 million. Current receipts are projected at Rs49.104 billion, capital receipts at Rs2.348 billion, and Rs9 billion has been allocated under the District Annual Development Programme (ADP).

The largest share of expenditure has been earmarked for establishment costs at Rs37.292 billion, followed by Rs18.210 billion for pension funds, miscellaneous expenses, and bailout packages. The budget also allocates Rs9.272 billion for the Engineering Department, Rs7.760 billion for Medical and Health Services, Rs6.418 billion for Municipal Services, and Rs2.651 billion for Parks and Horticulture.

The budget includes significant funding for development projects, with Rs8.595 billion allocated for ongoing and new development works, while Rs9 billion has been reserved for District ADP projects.

Mayor Wahab said the KMC expects to receive Rs37.389 billion in government grants during the next fiscal year. Additional revenue is expected from municipal utility charges and taxes (MUCT), advertising, land management, estate operations, parking fees, anti-encroachment operations, veterinary services, parks, engineering services, and other municipal departments.

The development budget focuses on improving Karachi’s infrastructure and public facilities. It includes:

Rs400 million for road construction and rehabilitation.
Rs250 million for roads, footpaths, sewerage lines, bridges, roundabouts, and intersections.
Rs480 million for district-level road and bridge improvement projects.
Rs1.2 billion for development projects across various union committees.
Rs800 million for drain cleaning and desilting.
Rs1.25 billion for beautification and rehabilitation of parks and roadsides.
Rs250 million for the solarization of KMC buildings and roads.
Rs500 million for solarization initiatives in union councils.
Rs500 million for Parks and Horticulture projects.
Rs100 million each for special development projects and minority community development grants.

The budget also allocates funds for urban forestry, Kidney Hill Park, the development of a park near Chaukhandi Graveyard, zoo and safari park improvements, information technology, and other civic initiatives.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the proposed budget aims to improve municipal services, strengthen infrastructure, enhance public facilities, and promote sustainable urban development while maintaining financial discipline and supporting Karachi’s long-term growth.
