Nine Simple Remedies That May Help Relieve Mouth Ulcers, Experts Say

Islamabad – Mouth ulcers, also known as canker sores, are a common condition affecting an estimated 10 to 25 percent of people worldwide. These painful sores can appear on the tongue, gums, lips, or inner cheeks, making eating and drinking difficult.

Experts say that mouth ulcers may develop due to various factors, including allergies, injuries, infections, or stress. While the exact cause is often unclear, several simple home remedies may help reduce pain and speed up healing.

1. Baking soda
Baking soda helps balance the mouth’s acidity and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. A mixture of half a cup of water with one teaspoon of baking soda can be used as a mouth rinse for 15–30 seconds.

2. Tea bags
Used tea bags may help reduce acidity and pain. Placing a used tea bag on the ulcer for about five minutes can provide relief.

3. Hydrogen peroxide
A diluted mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water can be applied to the affected area using cotton. It should not be swallowed.

4. Salt water rinse
Rinsing the mouth with salt water for about 30 seconds may speed up healing due to its antibacterial properties.

5. Aloe vera
Aloe vera gel can be applied directly to the ulcer to reduce pain and promote healing.

6. Yogurt
Probiotic-rich yogurt may help improve oral health and support healing, with regular consumption recommended.

7. Honey
Honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Applying it up to four times a day may help reduce swelling and pain.

8. Coconut oil
Coconut oil can help reduce inflammation and bacterial growth when applied to affected areas several times a day.

9. Apple cider vinegar
A diluted mixture of apple cider vinegar and water can be used as a mouth rinse for about one minute.

Experts note that while these remedies may provide relief, individuals experiencing persistent or severe symptoms should consult a medical professional.
