Sindh Records Major Progress in Polio Eradication as Most Environmental Samples Test Negative
Pakistan has reported significant progress in its fight against polio in Sindh, with the latest environmental surveillance showing a marked improvement in test results.
According to the Ministry of National Health Services, 28 out of 29 environmental samples collected across Sindh tested negative for the poliovirus, indicating a substantial decline in virus circulation.
Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal said the province has recorded its highest number of negative environmental samples since August 2023.
He noted that in the Karachi Division, 11 out of 12 environmental samples tested negative for the first time, while all 17 samples collected from other divisions of Sindh also returned negative results for the first time.
The minister described the containment of poliovirus transmission in Qambar and Kashmore as a positive development. He also highlighted that Badin and Mirpurkhas recorded negative environmental samples for the second consecutive month, calling it an important milestone in the country’s polio eradication efforts.
Mustafa Kamal announced that a special anti-polio vaccination campaign will be launched in Karachi during July 2026 to further strengthen immunization coverage and eliminate the remaining risk of virus transmission.
