ROME:** Italian Prime Minister **Giorgia Meloni** has responded to criticism from US President **Donald Trump**, saying her popularity is based on her ability to defend Italy’s national interests rather than on any personal relationship with foreign leaders.

In a statement, Meloni addressed Trump directly, saying, “My popularity has not increased because of your friendship. It depends on my ability to defend Italy’s interests.”

The Italian prime minister said she has always worked to protect her country’s interests and has respected agreements concerning the use of US military bases in Italy.

“We have always honored agreements regarding the use of American bases in Italy, and as long as I am prime minister, those agreements will not be violated,” she said.

Responding to Trump’s remarks about her political standing, Meloni added, “My popularity is not your concern. My advice is that you focus on your own popularity.”

The exchange comes after Trump once again targeted Meloni in public comments a day earlier. The US president claimed that the Italian leader had repeatedly requested photographs with him, including during a G7 meeting in France.

Trump also alleged that Meloni’s approval ratings were declining in Italy, suggesting that her refusal to support the US position on Iran may have contributed to the drop. He further claimed that Italy had not allowed the United States to use certain Italian runways.

Neither side has provided evidence to support the competing claims regarding public approval or military access arrangements.
