Why Fiber Is Essential for a Healthy Life, Experts Explain Key Benefits

ISLAMABAD: Dietary fiber, commonly known as roughage, plays a vital role in maintaining overall human health, ranging from improved digestion to weight management, blood sugar control, and protection against several diseases, health experts say.

According to medical specialists, fiber improves the digestive system by regulating bowel movements and helping prevent issues such as constipation. It also increases the feeling of fullness after meals, which reduces overeating and helps maintain a healthy body weight.

Experts further explain that fiber helps stabilize blood sugar levels, making it especially important for people with diabetes. In addition, it can lower cholesterol levels, thereby reducing the risk of heart diseases.

Several research studies also suggest that a high-fiber diet may help reduce the risk of certain types of cancers, including colon and breast cancer.

Health professionals recommend a daily intake of around 25 to 30 grams of fiber for adults, although the requirement may vary depending on age, gender, and health conditions.

Fiber-rich foods include fruits, vegetables, lentils, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Experts advise eating fruits and vegetables with their skins whenever possible and including foods such as oatmeal and whole wheat bread in daily meals for better health benefits.
