Arrested Tree” in Landi Kotal Becomes a Historic Curiosity

Landi Kotal: In the historic cantonment area of Landi Kotal, an unusual walnut tree has become a point of fascination for visitors due to a centuries-old story linked to the British colonial era.
At first glance, the tree appears ordinary, but a plaque installed by the local administration reads: “I have been arrested.” According to the inscription and local oral history, a British officer once ordered the “arrest” of the tree after reportedly believing, while intoxicated, that it was moving from its place. The unusual command led to the tree being symbolically “detained,” a story that has been passed down through generations.
Local tourist Abu Zar Afridi said the incident is part of the many unusual colonial-era tales associated with the region’s history, and the tree still stands in its original location as if time has stopped.
Although the walnut tree no longer bears fruit, it continues to attract tourists and locals due to its strange and humorous historical narrative.
Resident Sanaullah commented that if the tree has completed its “punishment,” it should now be “set free,” reflecting how the story has taken on a symbolic and philosophical meaning over time.
The site remains a small but popular attraction, blending folklore, colonial history, and local storytelling traditions in the scenic backdrop of the Khyber region.
