Why Ballpoint Pen Caps Have Holes: A Small Design That Saves Lives

ISLAMABAD: Many people use ballpoint pens every day, but few notice the small hole on the cap—an often overlooked feature with a crucial safety purpose.
Contrary to common assumptions that the hole helps regulate air pressure or prevents ink from drying, its primary function is to reduce the risk of choking and save lives.
Experts explain that some individuals have a habit of chewing on objects they hold, including pen caps. In certain cases, the cap can be accidentally swallowed and become lodged in the airway, posing a serious risk of suffocation.
To address this danger, pen manufacturers introduced a small hole at the top of the cap. This design allows a limited flow of air if the cap becomes stuck in the throat, significantly reducing the chances of fatal choking.
The safety feature was initially introduced by a major pen manufacturer and gradually became a standard design adopted across the industry.
According to reports, nearly 100 people in the United States die each year due to choking incidents involving pen caps. Without this simple yet effective design, the number could be even higher.
The innovation serves as a reminder that even the smallest design changes can have a life-saving impact.
