Bushra Bibi Undergoes Eye Surgery, Sister Raises Concerns Over Prison Conditions

Bushra Bibi, the former First Lady of Pakistan, has reportedly undergone a major eye surgery after suffering from severe pain and partial loss of vision, according to her sister Maryam Riaz Wattoo.
In a statement shared on social media, Maryam Riaz Wattoo said the family was unexpectedly called for a meeting with Bushra Bibi at 9 a.m. without any prior explanation. Upon arrival, they were informed that she had just been brought back from the hospital after undergoing overnight surgery.
She claimed that Bushra Bibi had been in intense pain for several days and had already lost vision in one eye. Despite her deteriorating condition, a doctor was allegedly consulted only a day before the surgery. Medical examination reportedly revealed a serious condition involving retinal detachment, which required immediate surgical intervention.
Maryam further stated that doctors had earlier warned, based on jail medical reports, that Bushra Bibi urgently needed laser treatment to prevent retinal detachment. However, due to restrictions on family visits over the past two months, they were unable to stay updated on her health.
Expressing concern, she questioned the decision to move Bushra Bibi back to prison immediately after such a critical procedure. She highlighted that recovery from eye surgery requires continuous medical supervision and a clean environment, warning that poor prison conditions could expose her to infections.
Describing the situation as “deeply distressing,” Maryam Riaz Wattoo urged authorities to ensure proper medical care and facilities for her sister during the recovery period.
