Italy Suspends Defence Agreement with Israel, Citing Current Global Situation

Rome: Italy has announced the suspension of its defence agreement with Israel, which included cooperation in military equipment exchange and technological research, according to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Speaking to journalists during an event in Verona, Meloni said the government decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence accord in light of the current international situation. She added that the decision was made considering evolving global conditions, but did not provide further details.
The agreement had covered defence collaboration, including arms development and joint research initiatives between the two countries.
On broader international issues, Meloni emphasized the need to advance peace talks and reduce escalating tensions in conflict regions. She also highlighted the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, calling it critical for the global supply of fuel and fertilizers.
Referring to energy policy, she reiterated that maintaining economic pressure on Russia remains an effective tool. She said sanctions imposed on Moscow continue to play a key role in efforts to achieve peace and expressed hope for progress by early 2027.
Meloni also criticized recent remarks made by former US President Donald Trump regarding the Pope, describing them as unacceptable. She expressed solidarity with Pope Leo, stating that she would not feel comfortable in a society where religious leaders are influenced by political directives.
On relations with the United States, she described Washington as a strategic ally but stressed that allies must still be able to openly express disagreements when necessary.
Her comments come amid heightened global diplomatic tensions and ongoing debates over security, energy, and international alliances.
