Sanctioned Chinese Tanker Passes Through Strait of Hormuz Despite Blockade

Karachi: A Chinese oil and chemical tanker has reportedly passed through the Strait of Hormuz despite an ongoing US naval blockade, raising fresh concerns over enforcement of sanctions and maritime security in the region.
According to media reports, the vessel is linked to a Chinese company under US sanctions, Rich Starry Shanghai Xuanrun Shipping. Maritime tracking data indicated that the tanker circled near the strait on Monday night before successfully transiting the waterway on Tuesday morning.
The ship had departed from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates and is currently en route to China.
In a related development, another tanker originating from Iran’s major crude export hub, Kharg Island, was also spotted in the strait on Monday. Reports suggest that the vessel transmitted misleading data through its Automatic Identification System (AIS), indicating it was sailing from Saudi Arabia.
Since the onset of the conflict, several vessels navigating this crucial global shipping lane have reportedly attempted to conceal their movements by either broadcasting false AIS data or switching off their tracking systems entirely.
Analysts warn that such practices could increase the risk of maritime incidents and complicate monitoring efforts in one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes.
