Balochistan Government Launches Strict Austerity Measures, Sets Market and Business Curfews

Quetta: Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti announced a series of tough financial, administrative, and economic measures, including a comprehensive austerity drive, aimed at strengthening the province’s economy and improving governance.
Speaking at a detailed press conference in Quetta, the CM said the government has already saved Rs1.4 billion through cost-cutting measures, with expectations to reach Rs2 billion soon. He outlined government plans in energy, agriculture, law and order, and anti-corruption initiatives.
As part of the austerity measures, official vehicles at the Chief Minister House are being auctioned, and traditional fuel-based vehicles are being replaced with electric vehicles (EVs) across government offices, excluding law enforcement and emergency services. Solar panels are also being installed at government offices to reduce electricity costs.
To tackle the ongoing energy crisis, CM Bugti announced strict curfews for commercial activity: markets will close by 8 PM, while restaurants and wedding halls must shut by 10 PM. Medical stores, hospitals, and emergency services are exempt from the restrictions. He stressed that while the decision may be challenging for businesses, it is essential for provincial and national interest.
Addressing public concerns, the Chief Minister clarified that stopping smuggling is the responsibility of customs, not police. Police officers will no longer stop vehicles at checkpoints under the pretext of anti-smuggling operations and will focus entirely on eliminating terrorism, combating serious crimes, and protecting citizens.
Highlighting support for the agriculture sector, CM Bugti announced the approval of the Farmer Card program, which will provide small farmers with a cash subsidy of Rs15,000 per acre for up to 12.5 acres, provided legal ownership documents are available.
Regarding governance and corruption, he warned that officials facilitating smuggling or other corrupt activities will face strict action, emphasizing the need for honest, hardworking, and accountable officers in the provincial administration.
Finally, the Chief Minister touched on regional and international affairs, highlighting Pakistan’s constructive role in maintaining stability in Iran, the Middle East, and the Gulf, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a positive, peace-oriented foreign policy that promotes regional cooperation.
