Economic Austerity, Ceasefire Efforts and Public Relief Are Top Priorities: PM Shehbaz Sharif

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that economic austerity, efforts for a ceasefire in the region, and providing relief to the public are the government’s top priorities.
The remarks were made during a high-level meeting on the regional situation and ongoing austerity measures, attended by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, federal cabinet members, chief ministers of all provinces including Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir.
The prime minister stated that the federal cabinet had voluntarily given up two months’ salaries, fuel usage had been reduced by 50%, and 60% of government vehicles had been grounded to minimize fuel consumption. He thanked the president and provincial governments for their cooperation.
Highlighting the regional situation, Shehbaz Sharif noted that the conflict has entered its second month and Pakistan is actively working to promote peace. He said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and the army chief are playing key roles in diplomatic efforts.
He acknowledged that Pakistan is also being affected by the war, facing economic challenges as a result. The prime minister expressed regret over the loss of lives during the conflict and emphasized that national unity is essential to overcome such challenges.
The prime minister further stressed the need to halt non-essential development projects to save resources and redirect funds toward public welfare, particularly for vulnerable segments of society. He also highlighted the importance of supporting the agriculture sector as the farming season begins.
Shehbaz Sharif revealed that, through coordinated efforts, 20 Pakistani-flagged vessels were successfully facilitated to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. He expressed optimism that peace would be restored in the region with continued diplomatic engagement.
He concluded by saying that both federal and provincial governments would work together to ensure austerity measures, mobilize resources, and protect the most vulnerable amid ongoing challenges.
