Mayor Karachi: Drug Addiction a Major Challenge as Fire Incident Averted in Clifton Store

Karachi: Mayor Murtaza Wahab stated that accidents can occur anywhere, highlighting drug addiction as a growing challenge for the city, following a fire incident at a private superstore in Clifton.
Speaking to media at the site, he said that rescue operations were promptly initiated and closely monitored. All relevant departments, including cantonment board representatives, were present and actively performing their duties.
He confirmed that 24 to 25 افراد were safely evacuated from the building, with no reported casualties. Administrative staff present inside the building at the time of the fire were also successfully rescued.
The mayor added that water tankers, fire tenders, and Rescue 1122 teams were deployed to ensure immediate emergency response. The fire has now been brought under control, while efforts are underway to clear smoke by removing grills and creating ventilation pathways.
Murtaza Wahab noted that the area falls under the jurisdiction of the cantonment board and had previously undergone a fire safety audit. However, a full investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident.
Referring to the Gul Plaza incident, he emphasized that a judicial commission was formed for transparent inquiry, and a similar approach may be adopted in this case. He added that fire safety audits are ongoing across the city, with strict actions taken where necessary, including sealing non-compliant markets.
Highlighting the issue of drug addiction, the mayor said such افراد often enter buildings to steal metal or other materials, which can lead to dangerous situations. He linked similar factors to previous fire incidents and confirmed that the matter has been raised with the interior minister, who has directed police to crack down on drug users and traffickers.
He concluded by praising firefighters for their bravery and dedication, stating that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation continues to equip them with necessary tools to effectively respond to emergencies.
