Pakistan Approves Major Measures to Ensure Food Security for Gulf States, Slashes Port Tariffs by 60%

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved sweeping measures to ensure uninterrupted food supplies to Gulf countries amid regional tensions and disruptions in the global supply chain. He emphasized that meeting the food needs of brotherly Gulf states during critical times is Pakistan’s duty, and no delays will be tolerated.
During a high-level review meeting at the Prime Minister’s House, Sharif expressed satisfaction with the strategy for exports to Gulf nations. A special committee has cleared 40 essential food items for export, including rice, edible oils, sugar, meat, poultry, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables. Both air and sea open routes will be used for exports, and no additional charges will be imposed on exports of perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, and meat.
The Prime Minister instructed that exports of surplus commodities should continue without affecting domestic supply. A comprehensive exporters’ database has been prepared, and officials causing delays in decision-making will be held accountable.
Reforms in Ports and Flight Operations
The meeting also approved significant measures to enhance the country’s maritime and aviation capabilities. Sharif directed the development of a comprehensive plan to increase flight operations at Karachi International Airport, Gwadar Port, and other international airports.
Port handling charges have been reduced by up to 60%, and Karachi Port and Bin Qasim Port will remain operational 24/7 during the Eid holidays. Customs regulations have also been amended to allow transshipment handling at off-dock terminals, boosting port efficiency.
The Prime Minister instructed that crude oil-carrying vessels be given priority berthing and that Export Facilitation Desks be further activated to streamline trade. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and other senior federal ministers and officials.
