Experts Warn: Chia Seeds May Not Be Suitable for Everyone

Islamabad: Chia seeds, widely regarded as a superfood due to their high content of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals, are known to aid digestion, reduce inflammation, and help maintain healthy weight. However, medical experts warn that chia seeds may not be suitable for everyone.

Gastroenterologists have highlighted five categories of people who should use chia seeds with caution or avoid them entirely:

Individuals with swallowing difficulties or narrow food passages: Chia seeds expand several times in water, and consuming them dry may cause them to get stuck in the throat. Experts advise always soaking chia seeds before use.

Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): The high fiber content in chia seeds can worsen bloating, gas, and abdominal pain if consumed suddenly in large amounts.

People taking blood-thinning medications: Chia seeds contain omega-3 (ALA), which has blood-thinning properties, so such individuals should consult a doctor before increasing their intake.

Individuals with severe digestive issues: Conditions like gastroparesis or other motility disorders may be aggravated by the gelatinous fiber in chia seeds, making digestion more difficult.

People with seed allergies: Though rare, individuals allergic to seeds may also react to chia seeds.

Experts’ Advice: Nutritionists emphasize that chia seeds are generally safe and beneficial for most people if consumed correctly and in proper quantities.

Recommended Usage: Start with one tablespoon, soak the seeds in water, yogurt, or smoothies before eating, and gradually increase to two tablespoons. Anyone with existing health concerns should consult a doctor before including chia seeds in their daily diet.
