Pakistan Completes 5G Spectrum Auction, Government to Receive $510 Million

Islamabad: Pakistan has successfully completed the second phase of its 5G spectrum auction, with the government expected to generate $510 million (around Rs142 billion) in revenue from the overall process.
According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the bidding process for spectrum positioning in the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands has been finalized. The auction for the 2600 MHz band was completed in three rounds, while the positioning auction for the 3500 MHz band concluded in five rounds.
Speaking at a press briefing alongside PTA Chairman Hafeez ur Rehman, Minister of State for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Pakistan is moving steadily toward digital development and the launch of 5G services will pave the way for a Digital Nation.
She announced that a 5G pilot project will begin in selected cities next week, marking a major milestone in the country’s technological advancement. The minister noted that Pakistan’s total available spectrum has now increased to 7,500 MHz, significantly improving the country’s digital infrastructure.
Shaza Fatima said the 5G spectrum auction represents a historic step for Pakistan, opening doors for foreign investment and strengthening the country’s digital economy. She emphasized that advanced technology will play a key role in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, trade, and national security, while faster internet speeds will benefit millions of users, especially young people.
PTA Chairman Hafeez ur Rehman confirmed that the combined revenue from the first and second phases of the auction will reach $510 million. He added that the results of the spectrum positioning will be announced shortly.
Telecom companies actively participated in the auction. According to PTA, 480 MHz of spectrum out of the total 597 MHz available was sold in the first phase. Telecom operators acquired significant portions of the spectrum, including 110 MHz by Zong, 180 MHz by Ufone, and 190 MHz by Jazz.
Industry officials believe the auction will lead to improved telecom services across Pakistan and accelerate the rollout of next-generation mobile technology in the coming years.
