Hania Aamir’s Drama Faces Criticism for Romanticizing Toxic Male Behavior

Lahore: Pakistani drama viewers are engaged in a heated debate over what constitutes “healthy love” on screen, as the television serial Meri Zindagi Hai Tu comes under intense criticism for its storyline and character portrayal.

The drama stars Bilal Abbas Khan and Hania Aamir in lead roles. The story revolves around Ira, a principled medical student, whose life takes a turn when Kamyar, a wealthy and influential young man, enters it. Kamyar views love as a mix of authority and stubborn pursuit, treating rejection as a challenge rather than a boundary.

A significant number of viewers argue that the serial repeats a familiar formula: a powerful and affluent man persistently pursues a woman, disregards her refusal, interferes in her life without consent, and yet is portrayed in a romantic light. As the story progresses, Ira’s resistance appears to weaken, and she gradually develops feelings for Kamyar, reinforcing the notion that persistence and pressure are proof of love.

Critics on social media contend that the issue extends beyond a single character’s behavior to the overall writing and limited character development of Ira. According to them, the serial not only depicts toxic behavior but also normalizes and glamorizes it.

Some commentators have further objected to the portrayal of Kamyar as an aggressive individual with substance abuse issues, arguing that the narrative attempts to justify his conduct. Certain scenes, they claim, also use religious references to assert moral superiority, which has sparked additional criticism.

The controversy surrounding Meri Zindagi Hai Tu has once again raised broader questions about whether Pakistani dramas are reinforcing unhealthy relationship dynamics by presenting them as expressions of love, potentially shaping misleading perceptions among younger audiences.
