Irrigation Projects Key to Agricultural Growth and Economic Stability: Balochistan CM

Quetta: Chief Minister of Balochistan, Mir Sarfraz Bugti, chaired a high-level meeting with parliamentary members and senior officials of the Irrigation Department to review ongoing development and rehabilitation projects in the Nasirabad Division.

The meeting focused on improving river water planning, restructuring canal systems, and enhancing irrigation capacity in agricultural areas. Officials agreed to expedite the completion of the Hirdin Drainage Project in District Sohbatpur, valued at PKR 5 billion. Plans were also made to include the rehabilitation of the Manjhoti and Uch canals in the next fiscal year’s budget to provide a sustainable solution to water shortages for farmers.

The Chief Minister instructed the use of modern technology for effective monitoring and management of irrigation projects, emphasizing phased restructuring of all canals and drainage systems with project directors appointed from relevant departments to ensure transparency and professional standards.

Addressing the meeting, Mir Sarfraz Bugti said, “Irrigation projects are the cornerstone of agricultural growth and economic stability. Nasirabad Division is the province’s green belt and fruit basket, and comprehensive measures are essential to increase agricultural output.”

He pledged that practical steps would be taken to improve the livelihoods of thousands of farming families and modernize the irrigation system in productive agricultural areas. He also emphasized strengthening accountability mechanisms to ensure sustainable project quality, efficient use of public resources, and the creation of new employment opportunities alongside agricultural development.

The meeting was attended by parliamentary leaders from PPP, PML-N, and Jamaat-e-Islami, provincial ministers, secretaries, and other senior officials.
