Large-Scale Troop Deployment Needed in Balochistan Due to Its Geography: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif

Islamabad: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that due to Balochistan’s vast and difficult geography, there is a need for the large-scale deployment of military personnel in the province.
Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, Khawaja Asif said the government had taken strict measures to curb smuggling, which led to major protests at the Chaman border. He noted that some people argue for negotiations with so-called nationalist movements, but said these groups neither have a genuine political identity nor represent true nationalism.
The defence minister stated that these movements are primarily driven by commercial interests, aimed at compensating business losses caused by anti-smuggling operations. He claimed that smugglers were earning around Rs 4 billion daily through illegal oil smuggling.
Khawaja Asif further alleged that criminal elements operating under the name of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) are providing protection to smugglers. He said a nexus has developed in Balochistan involving tribal elders, bureaucracy, and separatist groups.
Highlighting the recent security situation, the defence minister said that over the past two days, 177 terrorists were killed, while 16 security personnel and 33 civilians were martyred in incidents of violence.
Reiterating his stance, Khawaja Asif emphasized that Balochistan’s geography necessitates a strong and widespread military presence to ensure security and stability in the province.
