Conflicting Claims Emerge Over Enforcement of One-Dish Policy at Junaid Safdar’s Walima

Lahore: Conflicting claims have surfaced on social media regarding the implementation of Punjab’s one-dish policy at the walima ceremony of Junaid Safdar, son of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, sparking widespread debate.

Several videos circulating online show contrasting narratives. Some social media users claim that the one-dish policy was fully observed at the event, while others allege that multiple dishes were served, which would amount to a violation of the Punjab government’s own directive.

Journalist Murtaza Ali Shah shared a video on social media, claiming that guests at the walima of Junaid Safdar and Shanize Ali Roheel were served pulao, mutton qorma, gulab jamun, and gajar ka halwa. In contrast, another viral video shows tables laden with a variety of dishes, prompting users to question why the one-dish policy was not enforced at this high-profile event.

According to Basharat Raja, various media houses have reported that guests were served soup, chicken tempura, desi chicken, Amritsari mutton pulao, fish, and gajar ka halwa prepared in desi ghee.

Journalist Zafar Naqvi also raised concerns, noting that while the one-dish law is being strictly enforced across Punjab—sometimes resulting in police confiscating cooked food from ordinary citizens—questions are being asked about whether the same law was applied at Junaid Safdar’s walima. He cited accounts from individuals who attended the ceremony, claiming that the one-dish policy was blatantly violated, and questioned whether the law applies only to the poor.

The walima ceremony was held at Jati Umra in Raiwind and was attended by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and other prominent political and social figures. Approximately 700 guests were invited, with the invitation issued in the names of Nawaz Sharif and the late Kulsoom Nawaz.

It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif had recently directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab to ensure strict enforcement of the one-dish policy at weddings and other functions, warning of legal action in case of violations.
