Extremely Hot Tea and Coffee May Increase Risk of Esophageal Cancer: Study

**Islamabad:** Drinking extremely hot beverages such as tea and coffee, a popular choice during winter, may increase the risk of esophageal cancer if consumed at very high temperatures.

Research indicates that consuming tea or coffee above 65°C (149°F) can be harmful to health. Large-scale studies conducted in several countries have shown that individuals who drink beverages at such high temperatures face a higher risk of esophageal cancer compared to those who consume them at moderate temperatures.

Experts explain that extremely hot drinks can damage the delicate lining of the esophagus, potentially causing chronic inflammation and increasing the likelihood of cellular damage over time.

Although this link is not yet recognized as a definitive cause of esophageal cancer, the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified very hot beverages as a possible carcinogenic factor.

Further studies suggest that drinking tea and coffee at moderate temperatures in limited quantities may even help reduce the risk of certain head and neck cancers, particularly in parts of the throat. However, researchers emphasize that more investigation is needed to confirm these findings.
