Big Relief for Solar Consumers as Net Metering Continues Without Restrictions

Islamabad: Power sector authorities have issued a clarification regarding recent reports on net metering, stating that no ban has been imposed on new net metering applications.

Electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), in their response to a notice from NEPRA, clarified that the net metering facility for consumers remains fully operational. However, the procedure for submitting applications has been revised.

According to DISCOs, applications for net metering are being received on a continuous basis and the process has neither been suspended nor halted. Consumers have now been directed to submit their applications through an online portal instead of the manual system. The change aims to make the application process simpler, faster, and more efficient, while reducing delays and inconvenience for applicants.

Sources said that new applicants are now submitting their requests through the PITC Net Metering Portal. Once an application is submitted online, consumers immediately receive a registration number along with the date of application submission. This system enables applicants to track the status of their requests in a timely and transparent manner, which was not possible under the previous manual process.

Officials stated that the introduction of the online portal is part of an effort to effectively utilize modern technology. The move is expected to enhance transparency and significantly reduce the chances of corruption. The digital system will also make it easier to maintain records, monitor applications, and track progress at each stage.

DISCO officials added that the new system will benefit both consumers and institutions. Consumers will no longer need to visit offices repeatedly, while power companies will be able to manage and scrutinize net metering applications in a more organized and streamlined manner.

Power sector authorities have urged the public to ignore rumors regarding net metering and to apply for new connections strictly through the prescribed online procedure. Officials emphasized that there is no restriction on net metering policy, and that the changes are solely aimed at modernizing and simplifying the process for the convenience of consumers.
