Supreme Court Postpones Local Government Elections, Political Parties Condemn Move as Denial of Public Right

**Quetta (Qudrat Daily):** The Supreme Court has postponed local government elections in Quetta, sparking serious concern and criticism from lawyers and political parties. Speaking outside the Balochistan High Court, Advocate Rahib Baloch said that local government elections are a fundamental right of the people, and their postponement amounts to a clear violation of the Constitution. He added that the hearing on the election-related case is scheduled for January 21, and the court is expected to issue a decision to restore the constitutional rights of the public.

National Party Provincial President Aslam Baloch described the government’s request to postpone the elections as “beyond comprehension,” stating that citing cold weather and law and order as excuses to delay elections is tantamount to depriving the people of their rights. He affirmed that the party will ensure the elections are held so citizens can elect their representatives.

PTI Provincial President Dawood Shah Kakad said that the government is avoiding elections out of fear of defeat and that postponing the elections was an attempt to interfere with the political rights of the public.

Former Deputy Mayor of Quetta, Younus Baloch, explained that the voter registration in all wards was not complete and that the Election Commission was not fully prepared. He noted that holding elections under such circumstances would have caused significant complications, but the postponement allows the Election Commission to rectify its shortcomings.

Various political leaders demanded that the court, government, and relevant institutions take immediate and transparent measures to safeguard citizens’ fundamental rights, allowing them to participate in local governance and enabling local bodies to perform their responsibilities effectively.
