Pakistan Will Act “Openly” If Operation in Afghanistan Becomes Necessary, Says Defence Minister Khawaja Asif

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has stated that any potential action taken by Pakistan inside Afghanistan will be carried out “openly and clearly,” emphasising that Pakistan does not target civilians in its operations.

Speaking to the media, Asif said Pakistan’s international partners desire peace in the region, as stability would benefit them as well. He added that these countries are expected to intervene soon to support regional peace efforts.

Khawaja Asif warned that the Afghan Taliban risk isolating themselves, which could ultimately lead to their downfall. He said terrorism will only end when its “factories” are dismantled, allowing people to earn a lawful and peaceful livelihood. Calling the Taliban a “group of opportunists,” he said trusting them would be a grave mistake, as Pakistan has no expectations of positive behaviour from them.

The Defence Minister criticised the Taliban’s conduct, questioning which religious or moral code allows violence and destruction on the land one inhabits. “Our forces are highly disciplined, while the Taliban have no code of conduct,” he said. “What Shariah do they claim to follow?”

Asif reiterated Pakistan’s desire for regional peace, noting that all countries would benefit from stability. He added that Afghanistan is free to seek alternative trade routes or maintain relations with India if it chooses to.
