PTI Senators Call 27th Constitutional Amendment an Attempt to ‘Bury the Constitution

ISLAMABAD:Lawmakers from the **Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)** have strongly opposed the **27th Constitutional Amendment**, describing it as an effort to “not only distort but bury the Constitution of Pakistan.”
Speaking after the amendment was presented before the Senate Committee, **PTI leader Hamid Khan** said, *“The 26th Amendment marked the death of the Constitution, while the 27th seeks to bury it completely. Those who vote for this bill will never be able to justify it in history. This move will destroy the entire judicial system and disfigure the Constitution.”*
**Senator Zarqa Suharwardy** remarked that *“the President and Prime Minister must also be held accountable. You want to bring the judiciary under control in the name of accountability.”* She recalled that *during the 26th Amendment, her son was kidnapped and false allegations were made against her.*
**Senator Azam Swati** condemned the proposed amendment, calling it a **“black law.”** He said, *“This is a grave injustice to the Constitution and the judiciary. The judiciary’s funeral is being carried out — it will no longer be independent. This law will haunt you one day, and you will regret passing it.”*
**Senator Noor-ul-Haq Qadri** accused the government of taking major constitutional decisions with a **“fake majority.”** Meanwhile, **Senator Faisal Javed** questioned the legitimacy of the government, saying, *“A party with only 17 seats cannot run the government.”*
**Senator Mohsin Aziz** urged the government to **avoid haste** in passing the 27th Amendment. *“We are ready to support positive reforms,”* he said. *“The government should engage with us and discuss our recommendations instead of rushing this process.”*
