Talks Underway on Possible U.S. Military Redeployment to Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan

Kabul/Washington:Negotiations are ongoing between the United States and Afghan authorities regarding the potential redeployment of American forces to Bagram Airbase, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed during remarks at the Oval Office.

Trump stated that the U.S. “should never have left Bagram” and that efforts are underway to regain control of the strategic military facility. He emphasized that discussions are focused on stationing a limited number of U.S. troops at the base.

Earlier, Trump had highlighted the strategic value of Bagram, noting that it lies just an hour away from the region where China develops its nuclear weapons.

According to U.S. media, the talks are being led by Special Representative Adam Boehler, with both sides considering a scaled-down deployment rather than a large presence.

Bagram Airbase, once the centerpiece of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, was handed over to Afghan authorities in 2021 following the withdrawal of foreign troops after two decades. However, Trump has repeatedly criticized that decision, vowing to reclaim U.S. weapons left behind and to restore America’s military foothold in the country.
