New Study Reveals Where Mars’ Water Went

Islamabad (Qudrat Daily) – Scientists have revealed in a new study that much of Mars’ water disappeared due to intense local storms and the escape of water vapor into space.
Published in the scientific journal *Communications Earth & Environment*, the research provides a significant breakthrough in understanding the long-standing mystery of Mars’ water loss. The study, released in early 2026, notes that ancient dry riverbeds, water-altered minerals, and other surface features indicate that Mars once had abundant water and an active environment. However, the reasons for the massive water loss were not fully understood.
The study found that small but intense local storms on Mars can transport water vapor into the upper atmosphere, where hydrogen escapes into space. This process is identified as the primary reason for the planet’s permanent water loss.
Scientists say the findings will help understand Mars’ environmental evolution and the factors behind its drying over time. The research also highlights that extreme, short-term weather events can play a significant role in depleting a planet’s water reserves.
