Shepherd Saves Hundreds from Glacier Flood in Gilgit-Baltistan, Awarded for Bravery

Islamabad: A potential disaster was averted in the Ghizer district of Gilgit-Baltistan thanks to the courage and timely action of a local shepherd, Wasit Khan, who alerted villagers about an impending glacier outburst.

While the residents of Tali Das village were going about their daily routines, Wasit Khan noticed signs of a glacier burst and immediately raised the alarm. He quickly informed the villagers, prompting the evacuation of around 100 homes. Nearly 200 people were moved to safer, mountainous areas overnight.

Shortly after the evacuation, a massive flood struck the village, damaging homes but causing no loss of life. Authorities credited Wasit Khan’s swift response for saving countless lives.

In recognition of his bravery and sense of responsibility, the Gilgit-Baltistan Police awarded Wasit Khan with a certificate of appreciation and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000. Deputy Inspector General of Police praised Khan’s efforts as exemplary.

Government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq confirmed that several villages were submerged due to the flood, resulting in significant financial loss. However, he emphasized that no lives were lost and that monitoring of the area continues due to the blocked river flow posing further risk.

Wasit Khan’s heroic act has become a symbol of community spirit and courage, proving that even an ordinary shepherd can play an extraordinary role in protecting an entire village.
