Critical Meeting Held in Gwadar to Tackle Water and Power Crisis

Gwadar, August 11, 2025 — Following a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister of Pakistan on Gwadar’s ongoing water and electricity crisis, a key follow-up review session was held today at the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) office. The meeting was presided over by Noor-ul-Haq Baloch, Head of the Water Coordination Committee and Chairman of the Gwadar Port Authority.

The meeting was attended by GDA Director General Moin-ur-Rehman Khan, Deputy Commissioner Gwadar Hamood-ur-Rehman, GDA Chief Engineer Haji Syed Muhammad, Public Health Executive Engineer Momin Ali, QESCO Executive Engineer Hussain Bakhsh, Deputy Director of Water Projects Muhammad Akbar Baloch, and other relevant officials. From Islamabad, Senior Chief of the Ministry of Planning & Special Initiatives, Waqas Anwar, joined via video link.

Briefing the participants, officials highlighted that the primary cause of the water crisis in Gwadar is the insufficient power supply. The Prime Minister had issued clear instructions to the Ministry of Energy to address this issue urgently. Implementation is expected to begin in the coming days. Meanwhile, QESCO has been directed to ensure the immediate and uninterrupted supply of approximately 6 megawatts of electricity to key facilities including the Sawad Dam feeder, GPA desalination plant, and the airport pumping station.

To address the crisis locally, the GDA will initiate water supply from the new pipeline laid in the Mullaband area. New household connections are being installed, and desalinated water will be supplied from the Gwadar Port Water Desalination Plant. Additionally, meters will be installed on the main transmission line from Sawad Dam to the Airport Water Station to monitor water supply and demand effectively.

The meeting was also informed that severe voltage fluctuations last night disrupted the main water supply line to Gwadar. Repair work is underway and water supply is expected to be restored by this evening.

Later, the Coordination Committee held consultations with local councilors from Mullaband and surrounding areas regarding the installation of household connections to ensure community participation and enhance project effectiveness.
