Government Approves Cheaper RLNG for New Gas Connections in Pakistan

Islamabad: The government of Pakistan has decided to provide cheaper imported gas (RLNG) to new residential and commercial gas connection applicants. This significant move means new gas users will be supplied with RLNG, which is approximately 31.25% cheaper than LPG.

Unlike existing domestic consumers, who fall under 12 slab categories, new gas users will not be treated under the same pricing system. A senior government official explained that the country is currently facing a surplus of RLNG, and authorities want to utilize this excess by supplying it to new consumers across the nation.

As a result, the government has decided to lift the ban on new gas connections that was imposed in 2021. RLNG, which is delivered through pipelines, is still 20-25% cheaper than LPG and offers a safer and more consistent alternative.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has given in-principle approval for the move. The summary has been forwarded to the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCOE) for formal approval. Once approved, a media campaign will be launched to encourage people to opt for RLNG instead of LPG.

Currently, RLNG is priced at PKR 3,300 per MMBTU, while LPG stands at PKR 4,800 per MMBTU—showing a price difference of PKR 1,500 in favor of RLNG. Authorities also highlighted the safety risks associated with substandard LPG cylinders, making RLNG a safer choice for households.
