Eggshells: A Natural and Effective Way to Boost Plant Growth

**Islamabad:** Eggshells, which are usually thrown away after use, can in fact play a highly beneficial role in plant care. Rich in essential minerals—especially calcium—eggshells help strengthen soil structure and support healthy plant growth.

**Used as Natural Fertilizer:**
After thoroughly washing and drying eggshells, they can be crushed into a fine powder and mixed into the soil. This allows calcium to be released gradually, helping plants develop stronger roots and healthier stems.

**Protection Against Pests:**
Crushed or powdered eggshells sprinkled around plants act as a natural barrier against soft-bodied pests such as slugs and snails. The sharp edges discourage these pests from approaching plants.

**Seed Starting with Eggshells:**
Eggshell halves can be used as small biodegradable seed containers. Filled with soil and seeds, they allow seedlings to grow naturally. Once the plant is strong enough, the shell along with the plant can be transferred to the ground, where it slowly decomposes and enriches the soil.

**Added to Compost:**
If not used directly in soil, eggshells can be added to compost. During the composting process, they break down and contribute valuable nutrients that improve soil quality.

**Nutrient-Rich Water for Plants:**
Soaking dried and crushed eggshells in water creates a mineral-rich solution. Watering plants with this mixture once a week can help improve overall plant health and growth.

Experts advise that eggshells should always be properly cleaned and dried before use to avoid odor or bacterial contamination. They also caution that excessive use of eggshells may not be suitable for plants that thrive in acidic soil.
