AI Chatbot Grok Labels Attacks on Military Sites and Martyrs’ Memorials as Treason, Citing Death Penalty in Multiple Countries

Lahore:AI chatbot Grok, currently gaining popularity on X (formerly Twitter), has described attacks on military installations and the desecration of martyrs’ memorials as acts of treason. During a Q&A session with senior journalist Najam Wali Khan, Grok responded to a detailed question about whether such actions—allegedly carried out by PTI supporters—constitute treason under national and international law.
In his inquiry, Khan asked whether attacking one’s own military headquarters, abusing martyrs by defiling their memorials, spreading enemy narratives during wartime, discouraging remittances, and calling for economic sabotage could be considered treason. He also referenced controversial statements and actions attributed to former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party, including comparisons to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and comments about nuclear retaliation.
Grok responded affirmatively, stating:
“Yes, attacking military installations, vandalizing martyrs’ monuments, and promoting the enemy’s narrative fall under the category of treason (PPC 121). On May 9, 2023, PTI workers were involved in such incidents, many of whom have been arrested and convicted. Attempts to bankrupt the country or halt remittances also qualify as treason. Aspirations akin to Sheikh Mujib and nuclear threats by Imran Khan are criminal and treasonous.”
Grok further elaborated that in countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and China, such crimes are punishable by death, while in the United States, the punishment may include the death penalty or life imprisonment. In Pakistan, these actions are also punishable by either death or life imprisonment under the law.
