Karachi Fault Line Activated, Tremors Likely to Continue for Two More Days: Chief Meteorologist

Karachi: A series of minor earthquakes over the past 24 hours has caused widespread panic across Karachi, with seven tremors recorded in various parts of the city, including Malir, Landhi, Shah Latif, Bhains Colony, and Quaidabad. Residents rushed out of their homes, reciting prayers in fear as tremors shook the city.
According to the Seismological Center, the most recent tremor measured 2.4 on the Richter scale with a depth of 188 kilometers, centered around Malir and surrounding areas.
Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari confirmed that a fault line near Landhi has become active since yesterday, resulting in repeated seismic activity. He warned that Karachi may continue to experience aftershocks for the next one to two days as energy built up within the fault is gradually being released.
He urged citizens not to panic, explaining that although the tremors felt strong due to their shallow depth, the intensity is expected to decrease over time. “These tremors are normal for a fault line releasing built-up energy. The key is continuous monitoring and preparedness,” he said.
Laghari also highlighted that Somiani, a coastal area in Balochistan, is a highly sensitive seismic zone, where the Eurasian, Arabian, and Indian tectonic plates converge. Although this region has not experienced a major earthquake since 1945, experts believe a significant amount of tectonic stress is accumulating, raising the possibility of a major seismic event in the future.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and have advised residents to stay calm while remaining vigilant.
