Severe Heatwave Grips Pakistan; Temperatures Soar Up to 48°C

Islamabad: A severe heatwave continues to scorch most parts of Pakistan, with temperatures soaring significantly above seasonal averages. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted further intensification in the coming days and urged the public to exercise extreme caution.
According to the PMD, temperatures in the northern and plain areas of the country are expected to remain 5 to 7 degrees Celsius higher than usual, posing serious health risks. On Tuesday, the temperature in Dadu (Sindh) and Turbat (Balochistan) reached a scorching 48°C — the highest recorded this year so far. Similarly, Dera Ghazi Khan saw 47°C, while Bhakkar, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, and Nokundi recorded 46°C.
Punjab is also experiencing extreme heat, with the sun blazing intensely across the province. In Lahore, the minimum temperature is forecasted at 28°C and the maximum could reach up to 43°C, with no signs of rain expected over the next 2 to 3 days.
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert across the province. According to PDMA, temperatures are likely to remain abnormally high in both urban and rural parts of Punjab until at least May 19, which could be hazardous to public health.
Both meteorological and health experts have strongly advised the public to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, cover their heads when outside, and stay hydrated to prevent heatstroke or dehydration.
The PMD has warned that the heatwave is likely to persist in most areas of the country until May 20, urging citizens to take all necessary precautions to stay safe from the extreme weather conditions.
