KE Electric Can Now Receive 1600 MW Power to Provide Cheaper Electricity, Says Secretary Power

Islamabad: Secretary Power has announced that KE Electric can now receive up to 1600 MW of electricity, with the possibility of receiving even more in the future, to help provide cheaper electricity to consumers.
This statement was made during a briefing at the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Energy, where KE Electric officials also presented updates. MQM leader Aminul Haq raised concerns about the situation in August 2024, to which it was replied that the loss of lives in the region was due to the negligence of local residents.
Aminul Haq also pointed out that when a single feeder is shut down, entire areas are plunged into darkness. He inquired about the preparations for the upcoming monsoon season.
KE Electric officials assured that preparations are underway, with emergency response teams in place for the forecasted storms and heavy rainfall in Karachi. They acknowledged that illegal connections, commonly referred to as “kundas,” continue to cause issues, especially in areas where water accumulates, posing a significant risk to human lives.
Currently, KE Electric operates 2100 feeders, 70% of which are free from load shedding. However, the remaining feeders experience 6 to 10 hours of load shedding. The utility company has submitted a plan to NEPRA aimed at making 95% of Karachi load-shedding free.
KE Electric officials also disclosed that the company suffered a loss of 30 billion PKR last year. Despite this, they have reinvested their earnings into the system and managed to reduce losses from 40% to 15%.
