Pigeon-Related Lung Disease Spreading Among Women in Karachi: Experts Advise Precautionary Measures

Karachi: In the air of Karachi, flying birds are starting to pose a serious threat to the health of its residents. At a major private hospital in the city, 15 to 20 patients are being reported weekly, all suffering from lung problems caused by pigeons.
According to Dr. Muhammad Irfan, a pulmonologist, the condition known as “Bird Fancier’s Lung” is caused when particles from pigeons’ feathers, droppings, and small particles are inhaled. These particles not only damage the airways but also cause inflammation in the lungs. These particles silently enter homes through windows or air conditioners, affecting residents, particularly women.
Dr. Irfan explains that some patients suffer so severely that they require oxygen, steroids, or even lung transplants. He recommends that individuals experiencing any respiratory allergies or weakness should avoid pigeons and other birds.
Representatives from Civil Hospital mention that while multiple patients with respiratory complaints visit daily, there is no specific categorization for these diseases. They also noted that the trend of women suffering from breathing difficulties without any visible illness is not yet evident.
To prevent this disease, experts advise taking simple precautionary measures such as keeping windows secured and avoiding pigeon breeding in residential areas. For those feeding pigeons, extra caution is necessary while handling them.
