PTA Warns Against Using Illegal or Cloned Mobile Phones, Imposes Strict Penalties

Islamabad:The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a stern warning to mobile phone users across the country regarding the use of fake, cloned, or illegal mobile phones, declaring that such activities are serious offenses punishable under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.

In an official public advisory, PTA emphasized that individuals caught using mobile phones with tampered or “patched” IMEI numbers (which are modified through fraudulent means) could face severe consequences, including fines of up to PKR 1 million, imprisonment for up to 3 years, or both. Additionally, such mobile phones could be seized in joint actions by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and PTA.

The core issue lies in the tampering of IMEI numbers, which enables people to alter a phone’s identity and avoid proper registration and legal procedures.

### Key Points of the Advisory:

* **Tampered Phones:** If a mobile phone’s IMEI number is found to be altered or “patched” through illegal means, users may face significant penalties.
* **Penalties:** Offenders could face fines up to PKR 1 million, a prison sentence of up to 3 years, or both.
* **Device Seizure:** PTA and FIA may seize such devices and take appropriate legal action.
* **Legal Protections:** Users purchasing tampered phones unknowingly are still liable under the law; ignorance will not absolve them from punishment.

### PTA’s DIRBS System

To combat the growing issue of illegal devices, PTA has implemented the **Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS)**, which ensures that only legally imported and registered phones are allowed to operate on Pakistan’s mobile networks. This system blocks access to devices that do not meet the legal requirements, providing a safeguard for consumers.

### Public Appeal

The PTA has urged the public to verify the status of mobile phones before purchasing and to report any suspicious activities. This is essential not only for protecting consumers but also for preserving the integrity of the country’s telecommunication network.

**PTA’s Request to Users:**

* **Check Before Buying:** Verify the authenticity and registration status of a phone before making a purchase.
* **Report Suspicious Phones:** Inform authorities if any phone appears to be illegal or tampered with.

By following these guidelines, consumers can protect themselves from legal trouble and help maintain the credibility of Pakistan’s telecommunication systems.
