Tensions Flare as Afridi’s Statement on Pahalgam Incident Draws Backlash from Indian Cricketers

Karachi – Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi’s recent comments regarding the Pahalgam incident have stirred controversy, drawing strong reactions from former Indian players including Shikhar Dhawan and Danish Kaneria.
Afridi questioned the Indian military’s effectiveness following the attack in Pahalgam, saying, “Even if a firecracker goes off there, Pakistan is blamed. Despite having 800,000 troops in occupied Kashmir, this incident occurred – that means you’re incompetent and failed to provide security.”
Afridi also highlighted the double standards in Indo-Pak sports relations, recalling how Pakistan participated in the 2016 T20 World Cup in India despite tense political conditions. “India allows its kabaddi team to visit Pakistan, but not the cricket team. If you’re going to cut ties, cut them across the board,” he added.
His remarks provoked a harsh response from former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria, who openly criticized Afridi, accusing him of damaging Pakistan’s image.
Indian former opener Shikhar Dhawan also took to social media to condemn Afridi’s comments, stating, “We defeated you in Kargil too – how much lower will you stoop? We are proud of our army.” He further called Afridi’s statement “disgraceful” and advised him to worry about his own country’s issues.
Afridi’s statement has sparked a wave of criticism from Indian cricketers and their supporters. In an apparent move to curb the fallout, the Indian government has reportedly imposed restrictions on the broadcast of Pakistani television channels.
