Meta to Use AI for Age Verification on Instagram Accounts

Meta has announced the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to verify users’ real ages on Instagram. This new system aims to ensure that underage users are accurately identified, even if they provide false information during sign-up.

The AI tool will assess a user’s actual age and automatically move accounts belonging to users under 18 into restricted “teen accounts.” These special accounts, introduced in September 2024, are designed for users aged 13 to 17 and come with a range of safety and privacy restrictions to better protect young people online.

In a blog post, Meta stated that if there is any suspicion regarding a user’s true age, the system will trigger an immediate age verification process. If the user is found to be underage, their account settings will be adjusted to reflect teen safety standards.

Meta acknowledged that the AI system may not be perfect and could make errors. However, users will have the option to manually adjust their settings if needed. The company emphasized that determining the real age of users online is a major challenge, but it is committed to enhancing safety and providing age-appropriate experiences on its platforms.

The feature will first be tested in the United States before rolling out to other regions.
