Political Tensions Rise as Afaq Ahmed Claims MQM and PPP Attempted to Incite Linguistic Riots in Karachi

Karachi:Afaq Ahmed, Chairman of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), has accused both the MQM and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of orchestrating an attempt to incite linguistic riots in Karachi. Speaking at a press conference, Ahmed alleged that a motorbike was deliberately placed under a dumper at the UP Mor area, and a video was filmed to create unrest. He further claimed that those responsible for setting the dumper on fire were not arrested, and that this incident was used as a pretext to ignite linguistic violence.
Ahmed, emphasizing that the Mahajir Qaumi Movement’s struggle is not a one-day affair, stressed that his political stance had gained support from multiple communities, including traders. He criticized the PPP’s governance, claiming that it had been adversely affecting the residents of Karachi, and accused both MQM and PPP of trying to undermine his efforts.
“The so-called alliance between MQM and PPP is evident,” Ahmed stated, alleging that efforts to discredit his stance included portraying his movement as an attempt to stir up ethnic unrest. He also claimed that some political figures have been misrepresenting the relationship between Pashtuns and Mohajirs, further exacerbating tensions.
Addressing the issues in Karachi, Ahmed highlighted major challenges such as the city’s traffic congestion and declining educational standards. He pointed to the reduction of opportunities for students aspiring to study medicine and engineering, as well as the lack of representation in police recruitment. He also denounced the lack of action against the dumper mafia, accusing them of being linked to political factions.
Afaq Ahmed strongly rejected any notion of supporting linguistic violence, stating that his movement was based on fairness and equal rights for all communities in Karachi. He criticized the police for not taking action against those involved in the fire incident and expressed frustration over the continuous arrest of his workers.
The MQM leader also addressed the imposition of Section 144 in Central District of Karachi, labeling it as a sign of his success. He explained that his movement sought to address the city’s problems peacefully, with a focus on legal reforms and effective governance. However, he claimed that when his group attempted to raise its voice, political forces attempted to suppress them.
Ahmed also refuted accusations of inciting violence, stating that his movement only sought to highlight issues such as the lack of accountability and the rampant corruption in the ruling parties. He demanded the arrest of those involved in the incident at UP Mor and called for a fair investigation into the matter.
“We will not tolerate these tactics,” he said. “We are here for the people, and we will continue to fight for their rights.”
