Sindh Records Over 545,000 Migratory Birds in 2024-25 Survey Amid Concerns of Drying Wetlands

Karachi:The **Sindh Wildlife Department** has completed its annual **migratory bird survey** for the year **2024-2025**, recording a total of **545,258 birds** across the province’s **wetlands and water corridors**. While the numbers reflect continued avian activity, experts have raised concerns over **declining habitat quality** due to increasing **drought conditions**.

According to the survey, the highest number of birds was observed in **Nareri Lagoon in Badin**, which hosted **155,068 birds**, followed by **Run of Kutch near Badin**, where **91,634 birds** were recorded.

However, the total bird count has **dropped significantly** compared to the **previous survey**, which recorded **639,122 birds**, indicating a concerning downward trend in migratory patterns. The survey also highlighted that **traditional bird habitats such as Run of Kutch and nearby marshlands** are suffering from **drought and drying**, impacting the birds’ resting and feeding grounds.

Despite the drop, several notable species were still observed, including the elegant **Lesser Flamingos** and the **critically endangered Great White Pelican**, whose presence was seen as a hopeful sign for conservationists.

Wildlife experts are urging urgent attention to **climate change impacts, water management, and habitat conservation** to protect these vital migratory bird populations that play a crucial role in maintaining the region’s **ecological balance**.
