TikTok Enhances Family Pairing Feature to Boost Parental Control and Transparency

Islamabad: TikTok has introduced further improvements to its Family Pairing feature, providing parents with enhanced controls and greater transparency. These updates are part of TikTok’s ongoing commitment to online safety, aiming to promote responsible and mindful screen time among young users while offering better supervision for families.
The latest updates include:
Time Away Scheduling: Parents can now set customized screen-free periods (e.g., school hours, bedtime, weekends). While teenagers can request additional time, the final approval remains with the parents.
Teen Network Visibility: Parents can now view who their teen is following, who is following them, and which accounts they have blocked. This fosters regular discussions about online interactions.
Active Reporting Alerts: When a teenager reports content violating TikTok’s community guidelines, they will soon have the option to notify a trusted adult, even if Family Pairing is not activated.
With these updates, the Family Pairing feature now offers over 15 customizable safety, privacy, and well-being options tailored to parents, enabling them to manage their teens’ experiences on TikTok more effectively.
Encouraging Healthy Digital Habits Among Teens
To help teenagers improve their screen time habits, TikTok is also rolling out a “Wind-Down” feature for users under 16. If they remain active on TikTok after 10 PM, their For You feed will display a full-screen reminder with calming music, encouraging them to log off. If they continue scrolling, a more persistent reminder will appear.
Initial tests have shown that most teens opt to keep these reminders active, reinforcing positive digital behavior. In the coming weeks, TikTok plans to test mindfulness exercises within this feature, as research indicates that mental relaxation can improve sleep quality.
A TikTok spokesperson stated, “Safety is at the core of everything we do on TikTok. These new updates are part of our ongoing commitment to empowering families with the necessary tools to promote healthy digital habits. By enhancing Family Pairing, strengthening industry partnerships, and introducing innovative health features, we are ensuring that young users can explore, create, and connect in a safe and positive online environment.”
Industry Partnerships Strengthening Online Safety Standards
TikTok continues to actively collaborate with global leaders in the industry to strengthen age verification and digital safety standards. The platform remains committed to implementing additional methods to verify the age of users and ensuring that those under 13 are prohibited from using the platform. TikTok is also using machine learning technology to guarantee that young users enjoy age-appropriate experiences.
In partnership with Telefónica, TikTok is exploring the enhancement of age verification, validation, and safety measures based on mobile service providers. Furthermore, TikTok is a key partner in multistakeholder dialogues on age verification, working with the Center for Information Policy Leadership and the We Protect Global Alliance to establish best practices for age verification on digital platforms.
As part of its commitment to amplifying the voices of youth, TikTok is expanding its Global Youth Council for 2025. Following the success of the council launched in 2023, it plays a crucial role in shaping TikTok’s policies on safety, well-being, and inclusivity, ensuring that the platform evolves in line with the needs and experiences of young users worldwide.
With these latest updates, TikTok is reinforcing its commitment to digital safety and well-being by introducing enhanced supervision tools, encouraging healthier online habits among youth, and strengthening collaborations with safety experts. These efforts reflect TikTok’s ongoing work to create a safer and more supportive digital environment for families.
