Bill Gates Announces He Will Leave Only 1% of His Wealth to His Children

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has revealed that he plans to leave only one percent of his vast fortune to his children, emphasizing that he wants them to achieve success on their own merits rather than relying on inherited wealth. During a recent podcast appearance, Gates explained that while his children received excellent upbringing and education, he has made the decision not to pass on the majority of his wealth to them.
In the interview, Gates shared, “Every individual wants to make their own decision on this matter. In my case, my children have been well-raised and have received a good education, but after I’m gone, they will receive only one percent of my fortune because I’ve decided not to support them with it.” He further clarified, “I never told them to run Microsoft; I want them to succeed on their own and earn their own way in life.”
Previously, Gates had mentioned that he would leave each of his children $1 million as a gift, but no further inheritance. In his recent interview, Gates added, “You don’t want children to get confused or feel entitled because of your support and love, so I believe it’s important to communicate these ideas to them early and provide them with the best opportunities to move forward in life.”
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bill Gates is currently worth $162 billion, meaning that his 1% share would still amount to a staggering $1.62 billion. Gates has three children, and in an earlier interview, when asked if his children would be left poor after his passing, he responded that he would leave them an adequate amount of money but would not bequeath them excessive wealth.
Gates also confirmed that the majority of his fortune would be donated to his charitable foundation to continue efforts in disease prevention and poverty alleviation.
