Sindh CM Rejects Federal Plan to Build 6 New Canals, Calls It Unacceptable

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has strongly rejected the federal government’s plan to construct six new canals from the Indus River, calling it unacceptable. Shah presented a resolution in the Sindh Assembly opposing the project, stating that it violates the constitutional rights of Sindh. He emphasized that the construction of new canals is illegal, and the Sindh government, along with the public, will protest against the move.

Earlier, Sindh Minister for Energy, Nasir Hussain Shah, also voiced concerns, acknowledging the good work of the Sindh Investment and Finance Corporation (SIFC) for improving the country’s economic condition. However, he clarified that SIFC does not have the authority to initiate the controversial canal project. He further stated that if any project raises objections, those issues should be addressed, but any project that benefits the country would be carried out.

This resolution and statement reflect the deep concerns in Sindh regarding the federal government’s water distribution plans and the potential impact on the province’s water rights.
