8 Lakh Wheat Bags at Risk of Spoiling in Balochistan’s Food Department Warehouses

Quetta:In Balochistan, there is a growing concern that 8 lakh wheat bags in the Food Department’s warehouses may spoil due to inadequate storage facilities. The Food Department of Balochistan had purchased 10 lakh wheat bags from farmers two years ago, stockpiling them in anticipation of a wheat shortage to supply flour mill owners if necessary.

However, due to a good wheat harvest last year, wheat and flour remained abundantly available in the market, leading to a surplus in the Food Department’s warehouses. With inadequate storage facilities, there is a risk that this wheat may spoil if not used soon.

In light of this situation, the provincial government has directed that the wheat be sold in the open market. However, the wheat purchased two years ago at higher prices than current market rates is likely to cause significant financial losses for the Food Department.
