Two Incidents of Spectators Entering Grounds During Champions Trophy Matches Lead to Legal Action

As the Champions Trophy matches are underway in Pakistan, the renovation work at major stadiums like Lahore’s Qaddafi Stadium, Karachi’s Jinnah Stadium, and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was carried out to ensure that no spectator could enter the cricket grounds. Trenches were even dug in some areas to maintain security. However, within just two days, two incidents occurred where young spectators breached security and entered the ground, causing disruptions during the matches. Both individuals were arrested, and cases were registered against them.

Legal experts were consulted to understand the sections of the law under which these individuals were charged and the potential consequences they could face.

**Charges Under Sections 186 and 447:**

Legal expert Imran Shafiq, Advocate, explained that in the case of Abdul Qayoom, a young man from Fateh Jang, who was arrested at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, cases were filed under Sections 186 and 447 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

– **Section 186**: This section deals with obstructing or interfering with a public servant in the discharge of their duties. The punishment for this crime can range from 3 months to 1 year of imprisonment, along with a fine ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 Pakistani Rupees. The offense is bailable, meaning the accused can seek bail and be released until trial.

– **Section 447**: This section addresses unlawful entry into a place. In this case, the young man entered the cricket ground without authorization. The punishment for this offense is typically 3 months of imprisonment and a fine of 3,000 Pakistani Rupees. Like Section 186, this offense is also bailable.

Imran Shafiq, Advocate, clarified that anyone interfering with the duties of a public servant can face a jail sentence of up to one year and a fine of 50,000 Pakistani Rupees, depending on the severity of the interference.

**Incidents in Qaddafi and Rawalpindi Stadiums:**

It is noteworthy that after the Afghanistan vs. England Champions Trophy match in Lahore’s Qaddafi Stadium, a spectator ran onto the ground to celebrate Afghanistan’s victory. He was quickly apprehended by security personnel and taken into custody.

Similarly, in Rawalpindi, during the ICC Champions Trophy match between New Zealand and Bangladesh, a spectator managed to bypass security barriers and enter the ground. This individual, identified as Abdul Qayoom from Fateh Jang in the Attock district, had purchased a ticket for the Mir Bach Enclosure for 1,000 Pakistani Rupees. However, he proceeded to the Yasir Arafat Enclosure and breached the security, entering the ground. He was immediately apprehended by security and a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against him.

Both individuals face legal action, with the possibility of being granted bail if they present surety bonds before the magistrate.
