Mohsin Naqvi Proposed Giving KP Government Another Chance Before Governor’s Rule: Qaiser Sheikh

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh has revealed details of the federal cabinet meeting in which the government approved the imposition of governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had initially suggested giving the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led provincial government another chance.
In an interview with journalist Naeem Ashraf, Qaiser Sheikh said several ministers had expressed reservations about imposing an emergency or governor’s rule in the province during the first session of the cabinet meeting.
According to the federal minister, Naqvi and other cabinet members argued that the government should not rush into such a step and should instead provide the PTI-led provincial administration with another opportunity to resolve the situation.
Sheikh said he had also strongly supported the proposal, favouring dialogue over further political confrontation.

He added that, following the ministers’ suggestions, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif briefly suspended the meeting and directed Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to contact Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to seek his position on the matter.
Sheikh said no discussion about any communication with Fazlur Rehman had taken place during the cabinet’s first session. He also stated that no condition had been mentioned regarding the removal of Sohail Afridi from the position of chief minister.
According to Sheikh, when the second session resumed after the break, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif informed cabinet members that contact had been established with Fazlur Rehman, but the discussions had failed to produce an agreement.
The prime minister subsequently told the cabinet that, given the failure of the negotiations, imposing an emergency or governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had become unavoidable, Sheikh said.
The cabinet then approved the proposed measure.
The account provides an insight into the deliberations preceding the federal government’s decision, highlighting that some ministers initially favoured further dialogue with the PTI-led provincial government before resorting to extraordinary constitutional measures.
