Pakistan’s Electricity Tariff May Rise to Rs27.31 per Unit from January 1, 2027

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s electricity purchase tariff is projected to reach Rs27.309 per kilowatt-hour (unit) from January 1, 2027, as part of the upcoming tariff revision process, according to estimates prepared by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA).

Under the preliminary estimates, the agency has projected the total cost of electricity purchases at Rs3.55 trillion for the relevant period.

The estimates form part of the process to revise electricity tariffs for consumers served by the power distribution companies formerly associated with the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). The revised rates are expected to take effect from January 1, 2027.

As part of the process, the revised reference cost will be determined to establish the electricity tariff for the new period. The final rates for consumers will be set on the basis of the approved cost estimates.

The projected figure is part of the tariff-setting process and does not necessarily represent the final rate payable by all categories of consumers.
LESCO to Charge Rs14,400 for Smart Meters in Electricity Theft Cases
In a separate development, the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has started charging consumers involved in electricity theft or meter tampering for the installation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart single-phase meters.

According to sources, consumers found involved in meter tampering or manipulating meters to steal electricity will now have to pay Rs14,400 for an AMI smart single-phase meter.

Previously, such consumers were issued demand notices for static meters costing Rs5,500.

LESCO has now begun issuing demand notices for AMI smart single-phase meters instead of static meters, increasing the amount payable by consumers found involved in electricity theft or illegal meter modifications.

The measure aims to discourage electricity theft and prevent the unauthorised tampering of electricity meters.
