Why Are These Small Metal Buttons Placed on Jean Pockets? Learn the Interesting Reason

Islamabad (Daily Qudrat) — Jeans are a favorite clothing item for people of almost every age, but have you ever wondered why small metal buttons are placed on the edges of their pockets?

Apparently, these buttons seem to be placed to enhance the beauty of jeans, but in reality, their connection is more with the strength of the fabric than with fashion.

Interestingly, these small metal pieces on jeans are an invention nearly 150 years old, the purpose of which was to prevent clothes from tearing quickly.

What Do These Small Metal Buttons Do?

The metal pieces placed on the edges of jean pockets are called “rivets.”

When we repeatedly put our hands in the pocket or place a mobile phone, keys, and other items in it, pressure is applied to the edges and stitching of the pocket.

Over time, this pressure can weaken the fabric and cause the pocket to tear.

Rivets keep the layers of fabric firmly joined, which reduces the possibility of the edges of pockets tearing.

Whose Idea Was It to Put Metal Buttons on Jeans?

The story of this interesting invention begins in the 1870s. In America, a tailor named Jacob Davis noticed that the trousers of people doing manual labor would tear quickly near the pockets and stitching.

To solve this problem, he adopted the method of placing metal rivets on weak areas. Later, he partnered with businessman Levi Strauss to advance this invention and obtained its patent on May 20, 1873. This same invention became the identity of modern jeans.

Why Are These Buttons Not Present in Some Jeans?

You may have noticed that in some jeans these metal buttons are clearly visible, while in others they are not present.

One interesting reason for this is that in the past, the metal rivets placed on the back pockets of jeans would scratch furniture and horse saddles.

Because of this complaint, Levi’s began covering the rivets on back pockets with fabric in 1937 and had removed them by 1966.

Nowadays, many companies secure pockets through strong stitching and other methods, so it is not necessary for every pair of jeans to have rivets.

Are These Metal Buttons Still Needed Today?

According to experts, rivets still help increase the strength of jeans today, however, they cannot protect the fabric from every kind of damage.

Despite modern stitching techniques, their use continues, because they not only make pockets stronger but have also become the identity of the traditional design of jeans.
